Interview: Maria Carmela Annosi, Industrial Researcher in Ericsson Telecomunicazioni S.p.A

How would you present the collaborative project?

I would highlight the added value of RISCOSS in handling the risks and costs tied to the Open Source adoption in order to protect companies’ know-how, prevent IPR leakage, and avoid negative effects on brand reputation. Worth mentioning that if open source products are correctly managed, organizations can reduce development and maintenance costs, benefit from others' knowledge, and promote efficiency in their research and development activities.

What is your role in the project?

In the project, Ericsson R&D Italy has the role of case study provider and is the leader of the Requirements & Validation phase. I’m the main responsible for requirements collection, use case preparation and results validation. Ericsson will also contribute to the definition of Business models and services for Open Source Software solutions and risk management techniques. Therefore my role consists in assessing the generalizability and the feasibility of results while leading the development of risk management guidelines contributing with the background and knowledge acquired over the years.

What key innovation do you bring or help to develop?

We believe that understanding companies needs and constraints and translating them in challenging requirements for RISCOSS is an important step for the project success. This requires:
1- a good understanding of the organizational competitive strategies and business characteristics in a way to offer scaling solutions of RISCOSS results;
2- a solid experience about the open source software management in order to understand the challenges of open source software and shape new strategic road maps to optimize value for the companies minimizing the risks;
3- an extensive background in the SW engineering domain in order to recognize the value of new technological opportunities coming out from academic partners.

During your professional missions in various countries and organizations, did you notice large differences in term of risk and cost evaluations?

We can verify differences among companies or even parts of companies with respect to willingness on risk taking on production quality and its related costs. This depends on the maturity of the market segment targeted by the relevant company, technologies involved but even long or short term company strategies. Established products on stable market segments will be treated differently than new products on expanding market segments. Established products on shrinking market segments are less likely to attract investments and production related risk taking will be sparely considered. New or planned products on expanding market segments will most likely attract investments and risk taking will be considered due to release pressure connected to tight time plans. The above will be influenced by company image, business models and strategies.

Current Industrial Researcher in Ericsson Telecomunicazioni S.p.A, Ph.D. candidate in Product Innovation Engineering at the KTH Royal Institute of Technology (Stockholm), within the department of Engineering Design in the School of Industrial Engineering and management. Maria Carmela was, from 2008 to 2012, SW process advisor, Senior Process, Method and Tool Responsible, Off-The-Shelf SW product advisor in Ericsson Telecomunicazioni S.p.A. Since December 2012 she is a permanent member of the Ericsson Corporate knowledge area on process development together with a few process workers from different Ericsson PDU’s. She has authored 14 conference papers in the field of SW process improvement, SW process modeling and innovation management. She drove and is driving several research projects in collaboration with relevant Universities and Research Institutes like University of Toronto-Faculty of Information, IBM Haifa, Royal Institute of Technology (KTH), School of Industrial Technology and Management, Universidad Politècnica de Catalunya (UPC), University of Sannio-Department of Engineering. Her scientific research interests mainly concern: SW process improvement, Agile/Lean Methodologies, OTS based system, SW Product Line and Innovation Management. She is participating in the European Practitioners Group on Innovation and Engineering Processes European project since 2010. She has been a program committee member of CESI2013 workshop at ICSE conference.
